At NAMOR, we believe that the ability to compute Earth's interconnected systems comes with a profound responsibility.
Through Earth Computation, we are working to make the relationships between Earth's physical, chemical and living systems and their interactions with human and economic systems, computationally understandable.
We believe this new capability must serve humanity while respecting the integrity of the planet on which humanity depends.
Our ethical compass recognizes the intrinsic value of nature, the dignity and rights of people, the interests of present and future generations, and the responsibility that comes with making previously invisible relationships and consequences visible.
We commit to:
- Human dignity and rights: Upholding fundamental human rights, privacy, fairness and non-discrimination in the development and application of our technology.
- Integrity of the living Earth: Recognizing ecosystems, species and biodiversity as having inherent value beyond their economic or instrumental importance.
- Scientific integrity: Grounding Earth Computation in rigorous science, transparent assumptions, validated models and explicit communication of uncertainty. Distinguishing what can be reliably computed from what remains scientifically unresolved.
- Responsible computation: Developing technology that helps reveal consequences, understand risks and support informed decisions, without enabling avoidable harm to people or natural systems.
- Transparency and accountability: Making our computational methods, limitations and decision-relevant outputs explainable, traceable and subject to appropriate independent oversight.
- Equity across people and generations: Considering how the benefits, risks and consequences of our technology are distributed across communities, regions and generations, including the knowledge and perspectives of Indigenous peoples and vulnerable communities.
- Planetary responsibility: Recognizing that decisions affecting one part of Earth's interconnected systems can create consequences elsewhere, and designing our technology to help make those connections visible.
- Ethics by design: Integrating these principles into NAMOR's research, partnerships, products and deployments, with appropriate safeguards against misuse.
We believe that the ability to understand Earth's interconnected systems should be matched by the wisdom and responsibility to act on that understanding.
Earth Computation is not only a technological ambition. It is a responsibility.
